X-MEN BIOGRAPHY 101: JEAN GREY/ MARVEL GIRL

EARLY LIFE

Born October 27th, 1984, Jean Elaine Grey became the youngest daughter to Dr. John Grey, a college professor, and Elaine Grey and the younger sister to Sara Grey. The family grew up in a farm house located in Annadale-On-Hudson, New York as her father taught history for the nearby college. She was a bright, imaginative girl who spent her time either reading or playing with the neighborhood kids or Sara. Everything was going well until when she turned 10, she was playing with her friend, Annie Richardson outside which lead her to get hit by a car and die. Jean became so stressed out that it triggered her telepathic powers due to her emotions and cause her to isolate herself from everyone in order to keep her Sanity and also due to her very depressive state and Trauma.

As months went by, a Psychiatrist recommended her parents to take her to Professor Charles Xavier, who was secretly a mutant with the same powers as her. He revealed to her yet not her parents about her mutant status and to protect her, Xavier decided to block her intense abilities until she was mature enough to handle them. He also taught her how to unlock her potential telekinetic abilities and how to use them to manipulate and lift objects through psonic force.

While under Xavier’s teaching, she managed to help him calibrate his machine to track down mutants in the area along with having a psychic connection with young orphan Scott Summer’s (Cyclops) mind. After years of treatment, Jean managed to recover and Xavier managed to have her parents enroll her into the new established Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngster’s.

X-MEN

Jean took on the Alias of Marvel Girl in the new team Xavier established called “X-Men” to fight against evil mutants who use their powers against humanity and to create peace with them. She works with 4 other people in the group which are Scott Summers (Cyclops), Ice Man, Angel and Beast who she faced harassment with before but eventually evolved a friendship from their adventures and intense training inside the Danger room.

While on a mission in space, Jean was noticed by the Phoenix Force who took note of her unlimited potential. At that moment, she had a vision of becoming the Phoenix but it ended as it faded from her memory. Jean also fell in love with Scott yet develop a new strong attraction towards Wolverine, a new recruit of the team, later on.

The Phoenix

After the X-Men defeated Stephen Lang and his robots, The Sentinels, on his space station, the group escaped back to Earth in a shuttle using a lethal solar radiation storm. Jean, however, was dying from radiation poisoning which the Phoenix Force saved her which is the same people who created a clone that is exactly like her as they took part of her consciousness, memories and even her personality, eventually creating the Dark Phoenix.

For months, the Phoenix believed it was the real Jean and saved the universe by healing the M’Kraan crystal but everything took a turn when Mastermind manipulated their mind to cause Phoenix to go insane, leading Jean’s part of consciousness to come back and causing it to die. That part of Jean traveled to the afterlife where Death explained everything to Jean and how her energy and consciousness was rejected by her original body and leading her clone, Madelyn Pryor who later dies from a confrontation with Jean, to take over it. She then was eventually rescued by the X-Men, which created a new team called the X-Factor.

MARRIAGE AND SCOTT

Jean reed the X-Men soon after the Phoenix events and got married to Scott where they both temporarily traveled to another universe to take care of their son, Nathan Summers (Cable) and Eventually soon met their daughter, Rebecca Summers. Scott later on sacrificed himself to Apocalypse in order to stop him from gaining power and his body was used a host until his essence was removed by Jean herself yet their relationship was strained while Apocalypse had control over him.

The two later decided to split after Jean found out Scott was having a slight affair with Emma Frost and decided to become friends and they continued to date after Jean was supposedly dead but to this day, he still loves her.
