When Tragedy struck the first time, it was a slow and methodical torture. He dragged it out for decades, not to string along his victim, but to mess with those who witnessed his whole play. And when she was hit with that final stroke of his scythe, I was already braced for her execution.

That’s why it hurt so much more the second time around. Instead, Tragedy snuck up on his next victim before she could even realize he was behind her. We didn’t even have a chance to cover the children’s eyes. We stood stunned, watching his black cloak drape over her until she was covered by shadows, and when he pulled back we could hardly recognize her anymore.

It’s our fault, really, for thinking he’d leave us alone after his first meal. But when temptation himself gets a little taste of power, he only seeks out more and more until there’s just an empty shell left in the dust. For us to lower into the ground on the same strings she’d been manipulated with.

So don’t be afraid when you see me shopping for another gravestone and don’t be alarmed when you find me engraving our names. It’s a precaution- you could say. A way to make sure Tragedy can never screw me over because this time, I’ll be ready. And I will never let him have that same control again.

So just stay away… at least for now.
