Synopsis:

The people who escort you from purgatory into the world of the dead. After you die you must go through your personal gate into the world of the dead, and companions are the ones who lead you there.

SHORT REVIEW:

So I wanted to put some reccs up and had to choose which manga I should do my first quick review on. There were many candidates (lol) but I chose this bc I find that it is sadly underrated and deserves to be shed some much needed light upon.

Please keep in mind that I do this so others (YOU) can be exposed to this manga and hopefully it will get the attention that is lacking. This is NOT a professional review. It's for fun. If you want to find out more, go ahead- just google/Bing or whateva it.

OK!

First off, I read this quite some time ago and my memory is hazy on certain events that happened- however, I still feel the same energy I felt when I had read this... Def lessened but still there.

It is short. It has only 23 chapters but each chapter readily adds to the story. There is no fillers, no fluff. Nada.

It starts off just a bit slow, looks like more of a shoujo school romance rather than what it puts out to be in the description. But the pacing quickens and leaves you with the feeling of wanting to know more.

The concept of the plot may seem overused- afterlife? Didn't we hear or watch or read that idea many times already? But the author uses this very well, he creates a surreal medium that envisions a place where souls of the departed find themselves in. "Companions" as the title says are those whose duty is to accompany these souls to the gate that leads to the 'World Of The Dead'

The protagonist, Mako, finds herself ending up here. We see her develop and grow from here.

The background art is amazing, it is beautifully detailed and fits the overall atmosphere of the story when placed in contrast to the more simpler faces of the characters.

I felt guilty having to turn the pages even when overridden with anticipation of what's coming next.

The setting is very imaginative and exudes a suspenseful ambiance.

Utterly Heartwrenching. This manga clenched @ my heart and forced me to experience mixed emotions throughout the whole episodic story. You find yourself connecting with Mako and together you see through her eyes when reflecting back on her life which was tragically put at an early stop. You go on as Mako, to be revealed things unnoticed before, but unable to do anything about it.

I shed tears at the expense of these people's lives , I related and loved the characters too much. The manga really delves into the nature of humanity and the eye- opening reality of what is happening presently around us. It shows that death is just a phase everyone has to go through, it tells us that life is too short for hesitating. It leaves you thinking.

It is soulful, complex and comionate.

I didn't want it to end. I wanted more. "It is too short!!!" I thought. Although it abandoned me empty in my wake, the conclusion proves satisfying.

When embarking on this journey, you live the lives of many people in a short span of time. You learn to see death as beautiful as life in its own respect. Well I did.

It remains as one of my all-time favourites. It's something I would find myself reading again.
